GARDENA — The Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute’s Hinamatsuri event will be held on Saturday, March 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. at GVJCI Nisei Veterans Memorial Hall, 1964 W. 162ndSt. in Gardena.
GVJCI will celebrate Girls’ Day by making tri-colored hishi mochi and learning about wagashi or traditional Japanese confections. Sara Ogasawara will lead a workshop on how to make these beautiful sweets.
Born and raised in Southern California, Ogasawara moved to Japan to get first-hand experience of Japanese culture. She started learning wagashi three years ago and has since enjoyed all the ways that wagashi expresses Japanese history, the seasons and literature.
The cost to join this workshop is only $5. Any chaperones or guardians are free. There will also be an after-workshop tea time (serving complimentary green tea) for all of girls and their guardians to enjoy.
A doll display, courtesy of the Kono-Song family, will be available for picture-taking.
